Nanuet's housing is a little older and a little tighter than New City's: capes and small colonials from the late 1940s and 1950s around Middletown Road and Church Street, split-levels from the 1960s, and townhouse and condominium developments from the 1980s onward near the Palisades Center and Route 59. The two groups have different chimney problems. The older houses have short, often unlined or clay-lined brick chimneys that served a coal or oil furnace first and a fireplace second; many have been through two heating conversions. The townhouses mostly have factory-built (prefab) metal fireplaces inside framed, sided chases topped by a metal chase cover, and those covers rust through and leak after 20 or 30 years.
Small lots mean chimneys are close to neighbors' trees, so caps with animal screens matter here; a flue without one collects leaves and squirrel nests fast. For the 1950s houses, the question a chimney company will ask first is what the chimney is venting now. A gas boiler installed in the last decade in a chimney that was never relined is a liner job waiting to be found at the next inspection.
Nanuet is an unincorporated hamlet of the Town of Clarkstown, so permits for relining and rebuilds go through the Clarkstown Building Department, and every contractor needs the Rockland County home improvement license.

Nanuet questions
What does a chimney sweep cost in Nanuet?
About $150 to $375 for a wood-burning flue by HomeGuide's 2026 range, and $80 to $150 for a gas fireplace; add $250 to $600 for a Level 2 camera inspection. Shorter stacks on Nanuet capes tend toward the lower end.
My townhouse has a metal chimney. Who repairs it?
A chimney company. Factory-built fireplaces have their own listed chimney pipe, chase cover and cap; rusted chase covers get replaced with stainless, and cracked refractory panels in the firebox get swapped. A mason is not the right call for these.
Is a Level 2 inspection needed when I sell in Nanuet?
Recommended by NFPA 211 on any sale, and buyers' inspectors in Rockland routinely ask for one. For a 1950s Nanuet house with an original flue, it is the inspection most likely to find something, so sellers often get it done first.
