Haverstraw made brick. Through the 1800s the clay banks along the Hudson here supplied New York City, and the village's own housing was built from it: brick rowhouses, two- and three-family homes and storefronts from the 1850s through the early 1900s, concentrated around Main Street, Broadway and the waterfront. Those buildings have soft-brick chimneys laid in lime mortar, often shared between units, mostly unlined, and now 120 to 170 years old. Repointing with a compatible soft mortar (not hard modern cement, which cracks old brick), relining with stainless steel, and rebuilding failed upper stacks are the standard jobs for a mason who knows the village.
Up the hill and in West Haverstraw and Garnerville the housing is mid-century and newer, with the usual clay-tile flues and oil-to-gas conversion issues, and the newer riverfront developments have factory-built fireplaces in framed chases. The river weather is the same for all of them: wind, salt-free but constant moisture, and freeze-thaw that pops brick faces.
Permits go to the Village of Haverstraw Building Department inside the village, the Village of West Haverstraw for that village, and the Town of Haverstraw for Garnerville and unincorporated areas. Every contractor needs the Rockland County home improvement license.

Haverstraw questions
What does repointing an old brick chimney cost in Haverstraw?
Angi's 2026 figure for chimney tuckpointing is $500 to $2,500 for a standard job, by the square foot of failed joints; HomeGuide puts chimney tuckpointing at $8 to $30 per square foot. Large rowhouse stacks needing scaffolding can run above that.
Why does it matter what mortar is used on old brick?
Soft 19th-century brick needs a mortar softer than itself (lime-based) so that the joint, not the brick, takes the movement. Hard Portland-cement mortar on soft brick spalls the brick faces within a few winters. Ask the mason what mix they will use.
Can a shared chimney in a rowhouse be relined?
Usually, flue by flue; each unit's appliance gets its own correctly sized liner inside the old masonry. It takes coordination between neighbors and a Level 2 inspection first.
